During last summer vacation, I thought that it might be nice to try a sunscreen cushion for touching up the sun protection during the day and therefore I decided to go with the Aprilskin Magic Snow Sun Cushion in a first test which was provided to me for reviewing purpose by StyleKorean. Aprilskin is a Korean natural cosmetics brand which was raved a lot about during last year, especially for their cushion foundation. The brand is fairly young and was founded in 2014, but since then has won a numerous amount of prizes for their products. All though I love cushions I didn’t buy ny of their raved cushions and so I was happy to be asked by StyleKorean and be able to choose a product from this brand. I decided for the Aprilskin Magic Snow Sun Cushion. The Aprilskin Magic Snow Sun Cushion is an ultra-lightweight sunscreen that comes in a cushion compact. It is mildly formulated, making it suitable for children and adults according to the description. Furthermore, it doesn’t leave a white cast and yet has SPF 50+ /PA+++. The UV-protection is mineral based and still, it claims to leave no white traces. As you know, sun protection has to be renewed from time to time, but I personally am quite a lazy person. I discovered that I hardly ever touch up my sun protection on my skin and a cushion would make that far easier than a tube. The Aprilskin Magic Snow Sun Cushion comes packed in a cardboard box in a light pink color. The cushion compact itself has also a nice pink pattern on the lid and looks really feminine. The description on the cardboard box is only in Korean, but Aprilskin’s official site offers an English translation, too. Frankly, I’m no sunscreen expert. The field is so complex and until now I never had the time to really go deep into the topic. The product description says, that this cushion only uses physical sunscreen. I spot already two chemical sunscreens from looking at the list Octinoxate Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate and Avobenzone Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane….mh…that’s the first disappointment … Checking the other sunscreens I spot that Octocrylene and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate Uvinol A Plus are chemical sunscreens, too. Commonly used physical sunscreens are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, but I do not spot any of these here. I’m quite confused…is this product using physical sunscreens at all?! Inside the cushion compact is the typical application sponge. In order to use the sunscreen cushion, you dab the application puff on the cushion sponge until the product is transferred. Then you dab the puff on your face in a patting motion. Don’t smear or rub it on the skin. Of course, the cushion compact comes with a mirror inside the lid, too, so it is perfect for carrying around and use it while not at home, too. Unlike cushion foundations, the sponge in the compact is not soaked with BB Cream or Foundation, but with sunscreen. Therefore the color of the sponge is white. The sunscreen has a creamy consistency. It gives a visible glow to the skin but doesn’t leave any white cast. While applying it on the skin I can feel a cooling effect of the product. The scent of it is also flowery/fresh. It contains some plant-based ingredients like Lavandula, chamomile, and tea tree oil, which create the scent of the product. I didn’t have any problems with the application of the product and it also can be touched up and layered without any further problems. Aprilskin Magic Snow Sun Cushion has a nice texture and finish, but I’m disappointed that it is not a physical sunscreen as it states on their page. I personally am not someone who refuses any chemical sunscreens, but I prefer it if the description of products are correct. As I said, I’m no sunscreen expert, so if there is anyone who can explain more about the chemicals used here I would be happy to hear about it. Let me know in the comments or write me an email/PN. Oh, and since some of the chemical sunscreens may have effects on hormones and hormonal pathways I would not use this sunscreen on children, despite its mild formulation. My sensitive skin still isn’t ready for makeup, so I’ve been trying to avoid using any – even foundation – as much as possible. The truth is, some makeup is actually beneficial for skin. This hope of improving my complexion, plus the fact that I do need to wear makeup for certain occasions – like a wedding, for instance – overpowered my worries so I decided to try the very popular Magic Snow Cushion SPF50+ PA+++ from APRIL SKIN. This new version launched in September last year. So what’s the difference between this and the original? I regret to tell you that I haven’t tried the original so I can’t compare. Online reviews stated the following differences 1. The puff changed from beige to black. 2. The original refill is bigger and thus not compatible with version 3. Version is more buildable. 4. Version has better oil control properties. The latest product features a pearlescent black case with golden lettering. Like all other cushion compacts, it contains a built-in mirror and a puff holder that separates the puff from the cushion. The new case ensures the compact is airtight by automatically closing the puff holder when you close the cover There’s a clicking sound when you do so. However, the size is larger than I expected so I probably won’t be carrying it around in my bag. The compact is roughly the size of my palm. Remember to remove the protective film from the mirror. Each new product is sealed with a white sticker to prevent it from drying. The foundation is sandwiched between two layers of sponges. After removing the white sticker, there’s an intact white cushion. The foundation is released only when pressed to keep it hygienic. Refills can be purchased separately. The puff holder can only stay at two positions. Every new product is sealed with a white sticker to prevent it from drying. Use 2 or 3 fingers to hold the puff. I wonder if the case and puff are black for the sake of making it look more hygienic. To me, there really isn’t much difference between black and white because smudges will still be visible on either color. If you’re OC about these things, I’m afraid you’ll have to wipe your case from time to time. But of course, a black case and puff look sleek and stand out from the rest. While the cushion looks almost the same, the puff is less rubbery compared to others I’ve seen. It feels more spongy but is still refined and picks up foundation rather easily. The foundation has a high coverage so a slight dab with the puff already goes a long way. I basically just need 2-3 dabs from the cushion to hide all my blemishes I do have a lot of acne scars!. The texture is a bit powdery on my dry skin so I have to use a moisturizing primer. I love that it doesn’t feel too cakey, tacky or heavy, and also has a buildable texture, making it easier to control coverage. It also gives a soft glow without looking greasy, which I appreciate. There’s a slight floral and powdery fragrance. Textures of the cushion and the puff The 45% water-based formula is infused with mineral water, blueberry and aloe extracts to keep skin moisturized, and niacinamide for whitening. The foundation stays put fairly well, and is able to last me for a day even without the use of loose powder, moisturizing mist or touchups of any other kind. It also has high sun protection SPF50+ PA+++, using zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as physical UV blockers. Ingredient list and safety instructions My problem is with the shade. Being Chinese, I have medium skin tone with a slight yellow undertone I use N4 of L’Oreal’s True Match foundation. Like most Korean cushion compacts, Magic Snow Cushion is only available in 3 shades 21, 22 and 23 which are light beige, pink beige and natural beige, respectively. The one I chose is 23, which is the darkest but it’s still too bright for my complexion. It also has a pink undertone which doesn’t suit my skin. Before application left, after the first layer middle and second layer right Refills can be purchased separately. Sadly, this cushion compact is not for me due to the lack of shade variety.
